Business groups, universities and civil-society organizations in Nuevo León called on the state Congress on Oct. 2 to advance review of the proposed Metropolitan Coordination Law, El Norte and El Horizonte reported.

The proposal, introduced about a month ago, was referred to the Metropolitan Development and Infrastructure and Urban Development committees. El Horizonte reports that it would help coordinate municipal and state decisions across local boundaries while preserving municipal autonomy and carrying projects beyond changes of administration.

The groups point to rapid population and industrial growth on the metro area’s outskirts. They warn that delaying planning and infrastructure decisions will make shared problems harder and more expensive to solve. The issues named in the proposal include water supply, air quality, security, waste management and mobility.

The bill remains under committee review; the coverage names no vote date. El Horizonte cites the Consejo Nuevo León and business organizations including Caintra, Canaco Monterrey, Canadevi, Caprobi, Coparmex and Index Nuevo León among the groups working to advance the initiative.

  • Proposal: Ley de Coordinación Metropolitana.
  • Current step: review by two state legislative committees.
  • Supporting groups include Caintra, Canaco Monterrey, Canadevi, Coparmex and Index Nuevo León.
  • Shared planning issues include water, air quality, security, waste and mobility.
